1999 Pokémon Japanese Vending Masaki Promo Gengar Holo #94 PSA 5 EX

One of the most sought-after vintage Japanese Pokémon promos, this Gengar Holo #94 is the famous Masaki Promo, distributed through Japan's Communication Evolution Campaign. PSA catalogues the card as 1999 Pokémon Japanese Vending #94 Gengar-Holo Masaki Promo.

Unlike a standard Vending Series pull, the Gengar itself was obtained through a mail-in evolution campaign. Collectors mailed Bill's PC together with a Haunter card to Media Factory and received the exclusive holographic Gengar in return. The campaign ran from November 1998 through April 1999, with approximately 36,000 Gengar applications recorded. This unusual distribution method is the origin of the collector nickname “Masaki Promo,” referencing Bill's Japanese name.

The card features striking artwork by Hironobu Yoshida and is one of five holographic Pokémon distributed through the campaign. The original cardboard mailing holders are also known for leaving corner impressions on many surviving examples, making condition an important consideration with Masaki cards.
